My low carb success story.
Like many people, I’d like to lose a few pounds. I also want to feel better and more energized. The problem has been how to make that happen? I just can’t seem to keep to an exercise program and all the diets I’ve tried just haven’t worked.
A few of my friends are having success with low carb or Keto diets. The way they described it sounded hard. Counting macros, carbs and protein is not my idea of fun. It did sound intriguing though. The idea of my body burning fat on its own via Ketosis sounded too good to be true. But I needed to do something, so I decided to try living Keto my way. Instead of counting all the things my friends were, I chose to just reduce high carbs foods and replace as many of them as I could with low carb options.
First, I needed to take a hard look at what I was eating. I was eating a ton of carbs so I removed bread from sandwiches and other meals. That was fairly easy to pull off. Meals were easy too. I just made sure to make or order dishes that would be low or zero carb. For example, non-breaded wings, salads, fish, burgers, brats, and steak. I also tried to replace bread with low-carb toppings, sauces and spices whenever possible.
I’m a snacker. I like to snack throughout the day and my snacks of choice were usually loaded with carbs. I replaced high-carb chips and crackers with low carb snacks. I was doing ok eating cheese, almonds and veggies with low carb dips like Bitchin’ Sauce. But I really like the crunch of chips so I was craving more crunch!
I researched crunchy low carb snacks and the selection was limited. Many just taste awful. Parmesan crisps are nice and crunchy, but not filling enough to keep me from eating an entire bag. Pork rinds are good too, but again, not filling. Then I found Grateful Snacking crisps and granola. It was a game changer. These snacks are very satiating, meaning I only need to eat a few and I’m good for hours. I later learned that is because Grateful Snacking snacks are high in fiber. Now I eat them whenever I have a craving for something crunchy. Having a healthy, low-carb alternative to chips and crackers has helped me immensely.
A typical day of eating looks like this:
8am – Coffee and Grateful Snacking granola (5 pieces)
10am – A few Grateful Snacking Crisps and sometimes another cup of coffee
Noon – Lunch of cheese, meat and veggies with dipping sauce.
3pm – A few more Grateful Snacking crisps
6pm – Dinner, no bread.
9pm – Cheese and/or a few Grateful Snacking crisps
Drink water throughout the day.
I gamified ketosis. I use Keto Mojo test strips to monitor my level of ketosis. This makes it more like a game to see the results of cheating and to strive for deeper ketosis. I test daily and it makes it fun for me.
How do I feel? Actually, I feel about the same with some improvements. I am not cranky or groggy – I have good energy. I have been sleeping deeper and I think I have more mental clarity. No negative side effects so far.
The best part is that it’s working! It’s been 5 weeks and I have lost 2 pounds a week. That’s right, I have lost 10 pounds in 5 weeks by only reducing carbs - and no exercise!. Without a crunchy filling snack, I would be tempted to cheat much more with carb filled chips and not be successful. Grateful Snacking has been key in making it this far – no joke.
